We first delved into the story of La Llorona (also known as “The Weeping Woman”) back in 2011 when Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights in Hollywood revealed it as a maze for their upcoming season. That year, their interpretation of the classic Mexican legend was so wildly popular with guests that they decided to bring it back again for 2012.

The tale has been a part of Hispanic culture in the Southwest since the days of the conquistadores. Though the story differs depending on the source, the common thread is that La Llorona is the spirit is of a doomed mother who drowned her own children in the river, and now spends eternity searching for them. The spirit is known to especially be attracted to children, and will try to drown them as she did her own! Many parents in Mexico still tell this tale today to scare their kids from misbehaving.

Basically, the story is already terrifying on its own, so we’re excited to see what Warner Brothers (home of The Conjuring Universe) has in store for us with their upcoming 2019 film, The Curse of La Llorona. The movie centers on a social worker (Linda Cardellini) and her two young children, who must fight for their lives when they discover that the horrifying apparition La Llorona is real. Check out the new teaser trailer for it above and keep an eye out for ‘Father Perez’ (last seen in Annabelle).

The Curse of La Llorona is scheduled to be released on April 19, 2019 by Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema. Visit the film’s official website HERE.
