Redemption Room is a new live, immersive online thriller experience from London-based Secret Theatre. In this live ‘game show,’ the audience gets to judge six disgraced celebrities as they seek redemption for their societal crimes. The show is presented on Zoom, with contestants going live from 6 major cities; Hong Kong, London, Singapore, Mumbai, Sydney and New York.
“You will be judge and executioner, but when an evil virus infiltrates the proceedings, how far will you go?”
The show started with an introduction to our fabulous host Rex Shakespeare. Your typical game show host x 10, Rex was hilarious, charming and stylish as heck! From there we met our 6 contestants, with Rex prodding each for the details behind their recent social calamities. We also learned the deepest darkest fear of each, which was the first hint at the direction this game show was headed. When one contestant failed to show up, a member of the (online) studio audience was coerced into joining the game as the 6th. I won’t spoil the show from here, but as you can imagine, things got a little crazy.
Some of the fun in these types of events really depends on the crowd you have with you engaging in the chat. We’ve witnessed situations before where chat members were heckling the actors, asking obvious questions (clearly weren’t paying attention), or just being obnoxious. We were lucky this time, and had a terrific group participating with us. With all of us playing along together, the whole thing felt more real and immersive.
We were very impressed by the acting and special effects in Redemption Room. Even though it was running via Zoom, all of the transitions and dialogue were smooth. You could tell this production was a well-oiled machine, with all angles and potential issues thought out ahead of time. While I wont say we were particularly frightened at any point, we were certainly entertained and committed to the story. Redemption Room stands out as one of the most engaging and exciting online immersive experiences we’ve done. That’s saying a lot considering the influx of these types of events in the last year due to the pandemic. Four thumbs up for this top notch experience!
